EXAMPLE 1

Resilience in Combating Burnout

Anna had worked as an administrative specialist for a corporation for nine years. The last two years were characterised by constant stress, long hours and a sense of meaninglessness. She began to experience burnout symptoms, such as fatigue, decreased motivation and feeling stuck.

The role of resilience for Anna

  • She accepted that her current job was detrimental to her health instead of 'gritting her teeth'.

  • She treated the crisis as an opportunity for change rather than as a failure.

  • She began learning HR and recruitment skills in her spare time.

  • She benefited from support in the form of conversations with loved ones and consultations with a career coach.

Result

Six months later, Anna changed jobs, moving to the HR department of a medium-sized company. She feels more empowered and fulfilled in her new role, where she can utilise her administrative experience in a more welcoming and professional setting.

Conclusion

Rather than suppressing her emotions, resilience helped Anna to treat them as information and actively shape change.

EXAMPLE 2

Resilience in Career Change

Marek had worked as a technician for a small manufacturing company for 15 years. He was made redundant due to restructuring. Initially, he viewed this as both a personal failure and a threat to his financial security.

The key role of resilience for Marek

  • Instead of becoming discouraged, he allowed himself to take a short break and recuperate using his financial reserves.

  • He realistically assessed his competencies and shortcomings, without catastrophising.

  • He enrolled on a PLC programming and industrial robotics course.

  • He maintained a daily routine and set himself small goals to avoid falling into inaction.

Result

Eight months later, he found a job as an automation technician at a larger manufacturing plant. This role offered higher pay and greater development opportunities.

Conclusion

Thanks to his resilience, Marek was able to transform the difficult experience of being made redundant into a turning point rather than a permanent setback.

EXERCISE 1

Seek the source within yourself!

Step1

Take a sheet of paper or a notebook and, in a horizontal line, write down the five issues that you find most stressful in relation to your job search and career development. These will be the headings.

Step 2

Under each heading, list at least ten things that help you to overcome the issue, starting with 'I have this issue, but...'. These ten things should be positive.

Step 3

Based on your findings for each issue, what are your strengths? What kinds of things build your resilience? On a scale of 1–10, how confident are you in facing this issue now? Has your resilience improved at all? Refer back to your lists whenever you feel overwhelmed by the issue.

EXERCISE 2

Change your mindset!

Step 1

Prepare for a week-long self-observation of your resilience. Have a notebook and pen ready for writing and a phone ready for making recordings and taking notes.

Step 2

Each time you react to a situation that requires resilience, write in your notebook. Is your reaction positive or negative? What did you do? What do you think? How do you feel? Also write down the situation.

Step 3

Look back at your notes after a week.

  • Think about what made you react the way you did in those situations. How could you have reacted differently? How realistic was it? Think about how you could change this.

  • How do you feel? Why? How real was it? Think about how you could change it.

  • What were you thinking in those situations?  Why? How real was it? Think about how you could change it.

Step 4

Based on your findings, write down five ways in which you could adjust your behaviour and mindset in such situations. How do you think this would affect your behaviour and resilience?

Step 5

Try to apply the positive aspects of the process to your behaviour. For example, instead of thinking 'Why don't I ever get called for job interviews?', think 'Well, at least I'm getting practice.'

Step 6

See if, over time, your behaviour and thinking have become more positive.
