What is this tool and what is its purpose and benefit?
During a skills and competence safari, an individual observes the skills and competencies used in a particular situation, or in a set of similar situations, by experiencing them first-hand, and reflects on own level of experience and mastery of these skills and competencies.

STEP 8
Define the purpose of your skills and competence safari, and plan and prepare it.
-
Which sector and type of activity will it address? How does this relate to your career goals?
-
Where will your safari, or multiple safaris, take place? In what kind of situation?
-
What is the timeframe?
-
How will you collect and analyse the data?
-
What materials, equipment and permissions (if any) will you need? Take care of any necessary permissions and ensure the privacy of other individuals is respected.
Make a list of the essential skills and competencies that you think are required for your chosen situation. Do not take this list with you on your safari; keep it for later comparison.
Go on the safari with an open mind and observe the skills and competencies used in the situation you chose. Think for each step of the process:
-
Which skills and competencies are used in the processes, and when are they used? How well do they work in that context? Which seem important and which seem less so?
-
How do you feel about the activity? What worked well and what did not? What could be improved, and how?
Take notes, photographs, and audio recordings of your experience. For example, you may photograph signs or materials. Record any additional observations or insights related to the skills and competences you have identified.
Review and analyse the collected data using a Word document, spreadsheet, sheet of paper, or a whiteboard with sticky notes. Look for patterns and notable differences. Begin by writing down the tasks and events that occurred during your experience, categorising them as you go. Then categorise the skills and competences used for each one.
Visually mark the positive experiences for each skill and competence area, indicating when the skills were used well. Also mark the negative experiences. You can use different colours or symbols for this; for example, you might use smiley faces. Write down any additional skills and competences that you believe are important for each event and task, and cross out those you consider unnecessary.
Compare the findings with your initial list. What differences and similarities can you identify? Create a list of skills and competencies that appear on both your pre- and post-safari lists.
Based on your findings, create another list combining the different skills and competencies from your pre- and post-safari lists.
Based on your findings, create a development plan for yourself
