What is this tool and what is its purpose and benefit?

 

An opportunity mind map is a visual overview of career opportunities across different sectors. It helps uncover non‑obvious job and career opportunities, especially in regions where opportunities related to one’s education or training are limited. This tool broadens perspective and opens the mind to multiple career options.

Draw a circle in the middle of a sheet of paper, whiteboard or flip chart, then divide it into two equal halves horizontally.

On the top half of the circle, write your educational background, the job roles it typically leads to, and the key skills commonly associated with someone with your background.”

In the bottom half of the circle, write the region of your observation and the labour‑market ecosystem, including the industries, and emerging trends.

Generate ideas for jobs and career opportunities. Write the first ones closest to the centre and connect them to the centre with lines. Instead of writing full sentences, use keywords. This layer should include sectors, fields, and industries connected to your background. These could include adjacent industries, sectors that use similar skills or fields with overlapping tasks or tools. Consider your hard and soft skills, as well as your experience.

Create a second layer that branches out from the first one and connect the two layers with lines. For each sub-branch, list the possible job roles. Include both obvious and less obvious roles. This is where hidden opportunities begin to emerge.

Add a third layer and connect it to the second layer using branches. Write down the tasks, skills and requirements for each job role, such as typical duties, necessary abilities and useful competencies and possible entry routes. This will help you understand how your current skills could be transferred to new roles.

Observe and analyse your findings. Look for roles that you have not previously considered, that exist outside your original field, that match your transferable skills and that are in demand or growing in your region. Highlight expected and emerging opportunities.

Look at the patterns and connections. Review your map to identify recurring skills across different sectors and roles, as well as surprising connections between industries and opportunities that do not require significant retraining. These insights can reveal non-obvious career paths.

Write down your main findings for potential new job roles, sectors and careers. Use this information for your job search and future planning

  • Discuss your mind map with your career coach or counsellor.

  • Update the mind map over time. Save each updated version with the date. Comparing different versions allows you to track your progress.
