What is this tool and what is its purpose and benefit?

The “What If” tool promotes creative thinking by reframing challenges as opportunities and encouraging the exploration of scenarios that would otherwise be overlooked. In the Career Compass it is used to explore barriers on a career path, such as skills gaps, lack of confidence, limited access to guidance, and other obstacles, and to generate ideas for overcoming them. These ideas are then turned into actionable steps that support ongoing career growth.

Identify an obstacle in your career that is holding you back. Could it be a lack of specific skills, access to guidance or career exposure, or the geographic location? Write this as a heading at the top of a piece of paper or a whiteboard.

Think about the different aspects of this obstacle. Often, an obstacle is made up of a combination of different things. Write these down horizontally under the heading.

For each aspect of the main obstacle, write a 'What if?' question underneath it. For example: What would happen if this did not exist? What if I had access to the guidance I need? What if I could use other skills instead? This will provide a starting point for generating ideas.

Generate at least ten ideas for possible solutions to each 'What if?' question. Allow your ideas to flow freely, without judgement. These are your potential solutions. Write these ideas under the 'What if' question.

Review your ideas to identify any insights or opportunities that could help you overcome your obstacle. Look for patterns. Highlight the actions or support that would have the greatest impact. Select the most essential ones and turn them into actionable steps.

Create practical action steps for the concept, such as learning a new skill, seeking a mentor or building confidence through practice. Set a timeline with small milestones to maintain momentum.

Tips and hints for using this tool

  • You can use the 'What If' technique alongside a storyboard to bring your scenarios to life.

  • Ask a friend or family member for ideas on how to overcome obstacles.

  • Alternatively, you can ask an AI tool to suggest solutions to the 'what if' question. However, critically reflect on each answer, bearing in mind that your own answers are more accurate than those created by AI.

  • Invite experts in the field to answer your 'What if' questions on social media.
