What is this tool and what is its purpose and benefit?
In the Persona: Who I Am tool, you create a presentation of yourself. This serves as a starting point for career development, offering a visual summary of who you are. It provides a quick overview of your key features relevant to career development and work‑life skills.
'Persona: Who I Am' identifies your age, gender, demographic factors, behaviours, attitudes, educational and career highlights, significant life events and other relevant features. You can use this tool alongside the other tools in this phase and in the Career Compass toolkit. 'Persona: Who I Am' is based on a persona tool that investigates fictional characters representing typical users.

Steps for using this tool
STEP 1
STEP 2
STEP 3
Take a sheet of paper, minimum size A3, a whiteboard or an electronic file, and position yourself at the top centre of the paper. You can add your name or a picture of yourself.
Write down the main areas in which you provide more information about yourself, and think how you would organise this information on paper. You should add such information about yourself as:
-
Demographics: age, gender, marital status, children (how many), pets (what kind of and how many).
-
Health-related and physical issues, such as, neurodiversity, allergies or visual impairment.
-
Personality, behaviours and attitudes.
-
Values.
-
Lifestyle and living conditions (for instance, wealth and house type).
-
Hobbies, interests, likes and leisure activities.
-
Your talents (for example, I am good at playing the piano).
-
Cultural factors: Where am I from (this can also refer to a specific region) and how does this impact my behaviour and my desire to remain in my own region?
-
Motivations and goals.
-
Fears, frustrations and pains.
-
Needs.
-
Profession(s) and educational background.
-
Educational and career highlights.
-
Significant life events, and other relevant information.
-
Any other information that might be relevant to the case.
Feel free to leave some areas out or add others.
Fill in the information for each area. First, take notes on paper, in a notebook or on sticky notes (an electronic file is not recommended) for each area. Once you are ready, transfer this revised information to your persona board. You can also add colours, pictures and words to personalise your board. Work on your persona until you are happy with it.
